Criteria

Tryouts will involve 4-on-4 and 5-on-5 scrimmages with a few drills in warm-ups. Evaluators will answer the following questions and look for these qualities in determining program participants:

  • What impact does the athlete have on the game? This bottom line question emphasizes that skills like skating, stickhandling, shooting, and defensive skills are only of value if they are showing in competition.
  • Does the athlete compete tenaciously and effectively? This includes battling for loose pucks, one-on-one battles in open ice or tight areas, persistence and success in scoring and preventing goals.
  • Does the athlete play intelligently? Included in this question is rink and teammate/opponent awareness, anticipation, and creativity in terms of getting open and using available tools/teammates.
  • Does the athlete show unusual potential? This involves strong skating, passing, stickhandling and shooting skills, excellent defensive abilities, great passion and effort, athleticism such as speed, strength and agility, and the willingness and potential to make improvements.
